Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Showcases the Power of Sport at Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 One-Year-To-Go Celebration
Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby were centre stage at the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 One-Year-To-Go celebration, showcasing Wheelchair Rugby Fives, which will feature as a showcase sport at next year’s Games.
The special invitation-only event, held on Friday 10th July, brought together approximately 400 guests, including VIPs, regional leaders, partners, supporters and members of the Armed Forces community. The celebration marked the official one-year countdown to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, which will take place next year and welcome wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from around the world to the West Midlands.
Guests heard inspiring stories about how participation in the Invictus Games has transformed lives, while also meeting wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from across the Midlands and beyond. The event highlighted the positive impact of sport on recovery, rehabilitation and wellbeing, reinforcing the enduring legacy of the Invictus movement.
A major feature of the celebration was a series of live demonstrations showcasing some of the newest sports coming to Birmingham 2027. Among them was Wheelchair Rugby Fives, with Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby delivering an exciting demonstration of the sport with some very special guests.
As a showcase sport at the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, Wheelchair Rugby Fives represents an exciting addition to the programme. Guests had the opportunity not only to watch the action but also to learn more about the sport and experience first-hand the unique challenges and rewards of competing in a wheelchair-based team sport.
Alongside Wheelchair Rugby Fives, attendees were invited to take part in demonstrations of Pickleball, Laser Run and Hybrid Athletics, providing a preview of the innovative and inclusive sporting opportunities that will be available at next year’s Games.
The Wheelchair Rugby Fives demonstration underlined the important role adaptive sport plays in supporting injured service personnel and veterans. Through teamwork, competition and community, the sport helps participants build confidence, resilience and lasting friendships while challenging perceptions of disability.
The One-Year-To-Go event offered an inspiring glimpse of what lies ahead when Birmingham hosts the Invictus Games in 2027. For Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby, it was an opportunity to celebrate the inclusion of Wheelchair Rugby Fives as a showcase sport while demonstrating the power of sport to change lives, connect communities and support the recovery journeys of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans
