Rio Results Show a Massive Performance Gain

I have just boarded the train from London to Cornwall, the last leg of my return home from an amazing ten days in Rio. The journey gives me time to reflect and to share with you some thoughts on the games. Top of these must be to say what a fantastic welcome the warm, fun loving Carioca people gave us all. The media stories before the games suggesting that we would play to empty venues could not have been more wrong and for the big games and those involving Brazil, the venue was full to its near 13,000 capacity. Dorset Destroyers are looking for more players to join them in the league

The Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club is looking for more players to join them in the league. Currently the club is a little short of “classifiable” players and so are on the lookout for the start of the next season. So, what do we mean by “classifiable”? To play in the league you need to have a physical impairment in at least 3 limbs. When you join, you will get 4 free taster sessions and be provided with a rugby wheelchair, all equipment and full training. It is a very exciting time for the club, as it has only been training since Feb 2015 and is now taking the next step forward. Simon Starr appointed as Regional Development Officer

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Starr as the Regional Development Officer for the North of England and the Midlands. With a wealth of experience we are delighted to welcome Simon on board. Simon will be in post from 1 August 2016. Simon started out as a Table Official in August 2009 at the Trevor Williams Memorial Tournament. Since then he has been involved in each annual Super Series competition and the Nationals. Internationally, he officiated at the 2011 GB Cup, the London Test Event and Paralympics in 2012 and was fortunate enough to be selected for the World Championships in Denmark in 2014. Jason Leonard OBE Announced as First Patron of GBWR

GBWR has announced the appointment of Jason Leonard OBE as its first Patron. Leonard, current President of the RFU, was one of the most successful England Rugby players, winning Grand Slams in 1991, 1992, 1995 & 2003; the 2003 Rugby World Cup and a British and Irish Lions Test series (on the 1997 tour of South Africa). Leonard’s appointment furthers strengthens the relationship between the able-bodied game and wheelchair rugby, and sees him join England international Mike Brown, who is an ambassador for the sport. Wheelchair Rugby makes an impression on wounded Plymouth veterans

With the 2016 Rio Paralympics soon to start, Plymouth’s wounded military veterans have been finding out what Wheelchair Rugby is all about. GB Wheelchair Rugby sent a coach and multiple game chairs along to Help for Heroes’ Plymouth Recovery Centre to give the charity’s beneficiaries and their families a taste of the sport. Help for Heroes has been involved with Sports Recovery since 2008, offering around 300 events each year across 50 different sports at a grass roots and performance level to help rebuild lives.
