From Derby to Newquay to Palm Beach Florida

The pace of our activity increases as we edge towards the end of the year. Last weekend saw the second visit to Exeter and Newquay in Cornwall where our new Rugby Wheels programme was delivered by Paul Jenkins and Mike Spence - well supported by Adam Simmons from West Country Hawks - a big thank you to all three. At the other end of the country in Derby almost 20 participants joined the first Rugby Wheels session delivered there by Rob Tarr who it is great to see back in action - thanks Rob! Everyone went away from Derby with big smiles and waiting eagerly for the next session which is just what we want to see from this. The local TV channels in the West Country and the Midlands have been pi...

RUGBY WHEELS & NEW TALENT

There is such a lot going on at the moment and all of it very exciting as we continue to grow the sport and develop a performance system which will take us into the medals. This weekend we piloted our new ‘Rugby Wheels’ programme in Exeter and Newquay. The aim of this programme is to give any disabled person who wants a go the chance to experience our sport no matter what their functionality. This is an exciting initiative which meets our charitable objects as an organisation and offers something different. This weekend we thank Paul Jenkins and Keith Jones for coaching the sessions and also West Country Hawks, Steve Hillman from Cornwall CSP and Amanda Thomas for supporting the...

Coloplast Super Series Gets Under Way

The new season is now under way with Division One playing at Fenton Manor in Stoke this weekend and Division 2 starting their league games in Leicester a week later. A big thank you to Coloplast who continue to sponsor the Super Series as they have done for many years. This season's leagues will stretch into the spring of 2014 as we continually evolve the competition to manage the growth in teams participating. It is a great position to be in and with so many new initiatives bringing more people into our sport we can expect to see more new clubs starting up this season. In recent weeks Kirsty and her RDOs have been working with new groups in the Gloucester and Preston areas and I am excited ...

The Voice of Members

It is good news to see how our sport is growing and to see how our initiatives to increase participation are really starting to pay off. Individual membership is up, we have a number of new clubs and others that are soon to be launched.  Next week sees us finalising the programme for our next initiative which is to deliver our sport in all of the Military Recovery Units.  On Monday, along with Kirsty and Lee I will be visiting the  Tedworth House Recovery Unit in Wiltshire where military personnel who have experienced life changing injuries and illnesses are supported to get back to doing the things they enjoy. Our programme at Headley Court has shown that wheelchair rugby is incredibly p...

Searching for new Talent

After a long period of training, camps and competition finishing with the Europeans in Antwerp, the GB squad and staff are taking a well deserved break before getting back into an intensive testing and evaluation phase. Work will resume soon at the Peter Harrison Centre in Loughborough where the squad will be working with our dedicated Physiologist and Strength and Conditioning lead - all part of the exciting new partnership we have which has been funded through the Peter Harrison Foundation who supported the business case we presented earlier in the year. Alongside this our talent and development programme is about to kick off with the first Talent ID day on 15 Sep...

GB take Bronze

Congratulations to the GB team and performance staff on achieving the Bronze medal at the European Championships in Antwerp. This was a good performance from a new look side against some strong opposition. Despite a wobble against a good Finland team, in which Leevi dominated and GB went down 56-50 we came back to win against Belgium and take the number one spot in our group. In the crossover match Sweden were too strong and GB went down 47-53 but then bounced back with an emphatic win against Germany 56-43 to take the Bronze Medal. Sweden eventually went on to take the Gold in a thrilling final against Denmark which was decided by a one point difference 49-48 . GB can be pleased with their ...
