Membership 2023/24

We would like to update you on GBWR membership for 2023/24. Acknowledging the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, we are freezing membership fees for the forthcoming membership period.

In 2021 we moved to a common membership year which runs from 1 April to 31 March each year. We hope that this has made it easier for members and clubs by having the same point in the year for everyone to renew their membership.

Existing members have the opportunity to renew their membership at an early-bird rate between 1 to 31 March, and from 1 April will have to pay the full fee. You will receive a reminder email to renew, and please remember that you also need to have renewed your membership to continue training at your club and/or join the GBWR leagues.

We would also like to ask that all existing members go on the membership portal to update their profile by 30th April. Please note that we have revised some of the information required and added a diversity monitoring section. This information is stored completely anonymously but is a requirement if GBWR is to continue to receive funding from Sport England.

New members will be able to join at a reduced fee between 1 March and 30 September, and after this a half-year fee applies. Joining in March 2023 will give you membership from the date of joining and throughout the forthcoming membership year 2023/24. New members are also eligible to attend up to four sessions for free before needing to register for membership – players’ trial sessions are limited to training and will need to register before attending competition, however volunteers can use their trial sessions at competition.

As before, existing and new members can purchase membership individually through the membership portal, or this can be managed by club administrators.

Juniors

As a reminder, all categories of junior membership (Junior, Junior Programme, and Junior Associate membership) enter a ‘grace period’ for one month from the point membership is purchased. During this time the juniors can attend training, but supporting documents (phrased as ‘credentials’ on the membership portal) are required to attend competition, or continue training after this period. These credentials are reviewed by the junior programme manager of GB Wheelchair Rugby and, unless any queries arise, will be authorised to permit the junior to participate fully.

The documents need to be submitted each year when membership is purchased or renewed. With supporting documents now aligned to the common membership period, we hope this makes it easier for members to manage renewals and supporting documents at the same point each year. The parental consent form will also be available to complete via an online form, when the renewal period opens in March.

How to renew your membership

Membership can be renewed online via our membership portal.

Members who usually renew their own membership will be able to continue to do this in the usual way through the membership portal, and for those members whose club usually renews membership, the club admin will be able to do this in the usual way.

GBWR Coaching Clinic

GBWR are running two face-to-face coaching clinic’s with a focus on “how to play”. There is one session in the north and another session in the south of the country. The sessions are aimed at the newer and less experienced clubs and coaches and will focus on tactics and game play training and technical skills. The session will be a practical day of activity and coaches will need to bring a rugby chair, lunch and be dressed appropriately.

The sessions will be delivered by Rob Tarr, Gold medal winning Assistant GB Coach for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, and Lee Parry, RFU Coach Educator and current GBWR Talent Head Coach.

Coaching clinic: South – register here

Junior programme relaunch in partnership with Northampton Saints WR

GBWR are excited to announce the relaunch of its new junior programme in partnership with Northampton Saints.

After launching the previous junior programme back in 2015, Northampton Saints Wheelchair Rugby Club have built a very successful junior session off the back of the launch with 14 junior players playing regularly since 2018. Therefore, who better to relaunch the new GBWR junior programme in partnership with!

Northampton Saints Inclusion Officer, Jamie Higgins, will be leading the programme with the aim to develop more provision for classifiable junior players within the game.

“Following the return to play after COVID-19, there has been a gap in the development of juniors within wheelchair rugby. After seeing the success of Northampton Saints Wheelchair Rugby Club’s own junior sessions, it will be great to see how they can help grow the junior programme nationally and help more GBWR clubs provide activity and get more junior players involved.”

Jamie Higgins, Northampton Saints Inclusion Officer said;

“As inclusion officer at Northampton Saints I am passionate about sport for all, and we really bring that passion into our junior wheelchair rugby club. We first started our junior sessions in 2018 but had to rebuild that engagement after the pandemic due to numbers dropping off. Our junior numbers are back up, but until now we have had little to engage young players in outside of club sessions.

Jamie went on to say;

“We recognise that junior players across all clubs need a focus for their wheelchair rugby outside of club training sessions and that these young players are the future of the sport. What better way is there to support the growth of junior wheelchair rugby than to work in partnership with the sport’s governing body. We are delighted to be starting this partnership and seeing the future of the sport’s growth nationally.”

As part of the relaunch of the programme a festival for junior players aged 8 – 17 years will be held at Lodge Park Sports Centre, Corby between 10am – 2:00pm on Saturday 18 March 2023.

If you are a junior player looking to get involved in the festival or wheelchair rugby, or a club wanting to start junior provision, please contact Jamie at Jamie.higgins@gbwr.org.uk

GB Talent squad for Netherlands development team visit

“Over the last 12 months, the Talent squad has competed in the Egmont Tournament (Denmark), hosted the Swedish national team, travelled to the USA to compete against their development team and now we are hosting the Netherlands Development team for a series of five games, from the 17 to 19 of February in Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

We see competition as a key part of overall athlete development and it’s important that we continue to provide appropriate competitive opportunities. The restructuring of our domestic competition will support this, with available game time doubling for our Talent athletes, who will all now play in the Premiership AND a lower division, while remaining with their home club.

The games against the Netherlands Development team give us the opportunity to expose talent athletes to a different style of rugby, new opponents and allows them to put their game plans into action. We’re also looking forward to building a stronger relationship with our Dutch friends and learning from each other.”
