GB Talent Showcase Development in Four‑Game Series Against Poland

Talent Squad Gain Valuable Experience Against Poland

The GB Wheelchair Rugby Talent Squad took an important step forward in their development last weekend, hosting a series of games against Poland at Lilleshall.

Across the weekend, the teams contested four matches, providing valuable international exposure and high‑quality learning opportunities for both athletes and staff.

Poland proved to be excellent opponents throughout the series. With preparations well underway for Euro B later this year, they brought physicality and intensity to every contest, creating the ideal test for the Talent Squad.

The standard of play ensured that each game challenged decision‑making, execution and resilience under pressure, offering a realistic insight into the demands of international competition.

Aligning With the GB Environment

A key focus of the weekend was aligning the Talent Squad more closely with GB team strategies and behaviours.

This approach supported athletes in developing a stronger understanding of tactical principles, performance expectations, and the standards required both on and off the court. It also plays a crucial role in preparing athletes to step seamlessly into GB environments when opportunities arise.

Progress On and Off the Court

The weekend marked a significant milestone for the Talent Squad, with six female athletes involved. This represents the highest number of female players ever selected in a GBWR Talent team and reflects the continued growth of the women’s game within the pathway.

Across the squad, the contribution of all athletes reinforced the value of diverse experiences and perspectives within the performance environment, strengthening both learning and team culture.

Building Towards the Future

This group of athletes forms an important part of GBWR’s long‑term vision, with continued development aimed towards potential representation at the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games.

While Brisbane remains a future target, for some athletes the opportunity to progress may come sooner. Experiences such as this weekend provide a vital reference point, helping athletes understand the demands of international competition and the standards required to continue moving forward.

Head Coach Ayaz Bhuta said:

“We’re really pleased with how the players performed across the weekend. They embraced the challenge and demonstrated a real willingness to learn in a high‑pressure environment.

Poland pushed us hard, which is exactly what we needed. The way the squad adapted and applied our principles from game to game was very encouraging.

Their attitudes and behaviours off the court reflected the standards we expect within the pathway. This experience will be a valuable step in their development, and it’s exciting to see the progress they’re making as a group.”

GBWR would like to thank the Polish team for making the trip to Lilleshall and wish them the very best of luck at Euro B at the end of May.

We would also like to Steve Cassin, James Rootes and Jack Clarke for capturing and sharing photos from the weekend.
