“We’re buzzing”: Great Britain women’s wheelchair rugby team look forward to the challenge of competing in the forthcoming Women’s Cup in Paris.
The Women’s Cup is due to tip-off tomorrow evening, and we caught up with the team to learn how their journey has been so far.
Rob Tarr, GB women’s team head coach was asked how he felt the preparations were going for the upcoming competition and he said:
“The players who have been selected are some of the most talented and dedicated athletes I have ever had the privilege to work with. They have challenged me and improved me as a coach, and I am very grateful to be joining them on a very exciting journey.
We have had two weekend training camps together and the lines are looking strong. The Leicester Tigers squad kindly joined us at our last camp to give the GB team a pre-competition workout, the ladies took some very big hits and tumbles but they showed their resilience and battled their way through to end the game with a win.”
Rob continued to say:
“There is no doubt that our ladies are serious contenders and I have done everything possible to prepare the team both physically and mentally for a Gold medal performance.
I have been part of the sport since 1984 and was one of the athletes who competed in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games when the sport was first demonstrated to the world. It’s been inspiring over the years to see so many talented women wheelchair rugby athletes make an such an impact in a male dominated sport and I am excited that the spotlight on this event will encourage more women and girls to participate in the future.

GB open the competition against a strong Canadian team on Thursday at 4pm, this will be followed by a press conference to launch the event. The games will be live streamed via Wheelchair Rugby Frances’ YouTube channel, the team are looking forward to starting their campaign on Thursday evening and are confident they will have a successful tournament.
