It’s three from three for Great Britain in Denmark following their victory against Germany last night at the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships. The team showed their strength and depth against an impressive New Zealand this morning in a match that could have gone either way.
The hard-fought game ended 55 v 50 with GB up in the first quarter, New Zealand taking the lead in the second before GB fought back with Kylie Grimes, the only woman on the team, coming in. An impressive steal from Ollie Mangion and Aaron Phipps scoring a vital try in the final seconds led to the team securing the lead at the halfway point. The third quarter proved another tight one with New Zealand responding to every turnover and impressive performances from Jamie Stead, Aaron Phipps, and Nick Cummins. GB entered the final quarter ahead but with just one point in it, before building a four-try lead and ultimately winning by five points in an extremely well-deserved victory.
Great Britain are in a tightly contested group with all four teams performing well and everything to play for. Tonight they take on France at 19:15 BST with their final match in the pool tomorrow against the USA at 19:15 BST. With France beating the USA earlier today by just one point and, like GB, winning three of their three matches so far, the game is bound to be a tough one. The top four teams in each pool will then move on to Friday’s quarter-finals.
