Leicester Tigers took five wins from five to go top of the BT Super Series Division One in the opening league weekend of the season.

On home turf at the Leicester Arena, Darren Matthews’ team were unstoppable as they managed to win all of their fixtures to take maximum points. In Pool A, Tigers managed to beat Team Solent Sharks (56-43), Canterbury Hellfire (58-41) and West Coast Crash (48-40) before a semi final win over London Crusaders (51-35). In a rematch of the opening Pool A game, Tigers again made light work of Sharks ending the weekend with a 65-36 win in the final.

Tigers also made it a hat-trick of wins in the individual player awards with GB trio Gavin Walker, Nick Cummings and Jamie Stead taking three of the six awards available. They will look to consolidate their position at the top of the table when the sides return to the Leicester Arena on November 25th/26th.

The weekend marked the opening round of BT Super Series Division One action with eight of the UK & Ireland’s best sides going wheel-to-wheel in an action packed weekend of rugby. After last season’s fourth place finish, Leicester Tigers looked strong and ended the weekend at the top of the table. Current champions London Storm struggled in their first chance to retain title and will be looking to seriously improve in November.

It was a good weekend all round with Team Solent Sharks playing some great rugby to clinch second place with just two defeats from five. Gary Banks’ side lost twice to Tigers, once in the Pool A and again in the final, however they picked up impressive wins over Crash (46-45), Canterbury (58-53) and Bulls (56-53).

The newly named DMP Bulls finished the weekend in third with both London Crusaders and Storm finished fourth and seventh respectivly. Canterbury managed a respectful sixth in their Division One debut, even without their player/coach Steve Brown.

Last year’s runners up Crash came fifth whilst Storm ended the weekend in seventh with just two wins from five, both coming against the Gaelic Warriors, who with a depleted squad, played all five games with just four players.

The individual award winners were;

Best in Class 0.5/1.0- Harry Langley (Canterbury Hellfire)

Best in Class 1.5- Nick Cummings (Leicester Tigers)

Best in Class 2.0- Gavin Walker (Leicester Tigers)

Best in Class 2.5- Jamie Stead (Leicester Tigers)

Best in Class 3.0/3.5/4.0- Luke White (Canterbury Hellfire)

Best in Class MVP- Coral Batey (DMP Bulls)
