Biography
Oliver Wightman is one of the most exciting young talents emerging in British wheelchair rugby. A multi-sport athlete with a background in wheelchair basketball, Oliver transitioned to wheelchair rugby in 2024 and quickly made a name for himself with his natural athleticism, tactical awareness, and competitive drive.
Currently training with Penrith Pumas WRC and West Coast WRC, Oliver has already made a significant impact on the national stage. He was named Most Valuable Player at the 2024 WR5s National Cup, where his height, speed, and skill proved a major challenge for opposing teams
His rapid rise through the ranks earned him a place on the GB Performance Programme, and he has since competed in multiple domestic tournaments.
Oliver’s sporting journey began at the age of four in wheelchair basketball, a sport he played alongside his younger brother. His success in basketball includes a junior championship title and a silver medal at a European tournament. Now fully focused on wheelchair rugby, Oliver is balancing elite sport with his academic studies, preparing for A-levels while aiming to study Physiotherapy at the University of Nottingham.
With his sights set on the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, Oliver is a rising star in the GBWR pathway, bringing energy, humility, and a fierce competitive spirit to every game.
