On Saturday 6 August the first Welsh Wheelchair Rugby Open tournament took place at the LC2 on Oystermouth Rd in Swansea. The event was sponsored by Disability Sport Wales and was part of a Para Sport Festival.
Four teams competed for the trophy with each team playing three games in the preliminary round. There were some close games throughout the day, most notably against Ospreys and Dragons which ended with Ospreys winning by three try’s. This was followed by RGC who took the win over the Tiger Seals by three try’s also. The tournament was played in true sportsman fashion and enjoyed by all.
The play off for third and fourth was between South Wales rivals Newport Dragons and Ospreys with Ospreys victorious on this occasion. The final was between RGC and Tiger Seals where experienced RGC tram remained undefeated to take the title of Welsh Open champions.
Full results for the tournament are below.
MVP for the tournament voted by her peers and well deserved was Claire Blackburn from Ospreys.
The Welsh Open will run again next year as part of the Para Sport Festival – venue to to be confirmed. We hope to expand on this year’s success and increase the number of entrants.
