GBWR has launched a new online version of the Introduction to Officiating course. This is a two-hour online webinar and is designed to give people a basic understanding of the different officiating roles within wheelchair rugby, without the need to travel to attend the course.
The course has been launched with the first full course taking place on the 7th October. This is after a successful pilot which was run at the end of August with some volunteers from the Talent programme and West Country Hawks. One of these volunteers said:
“I felt by attending the webinar that it gave me greater insight into the hard work officials do and what they look for. I particularly liked the aspect of scoring the sheet as that takes some serious concentration and a quick eye, and maybe the odd bit of help from others on the bench.”
The course covers: what makes a good official, the different officiating roles, the rules of the game, the equipment used by the officials, how to complete a score sheet & penalty bin sheet, referee positioning & decisions. With the course we have balanced the traditional presentation slides with videos, individual tasks and the opportunity to ask lots of questions.
At the end of the course learners will have a basic understanding of wheelchair rugby officiating and be at the development level of the pathway. This will provide learners the grounding to decide if they want to work towards their Level 1 Award as a Table Official or Referee. If learners want to tart on the pathway, GBWR will be able to deploy them at various different competitions, supported by an Educator and other experienced officials.
