GBWR women and girls day at King Power Quad Nations 2022

On Saturday 17 September GBWR ran a women and girls event at the King Power Quad Nations 2022 tournament. Twenty-one ladies from all over the country came together to take part in the morning coaching session delivered by Jamie Higgins from Northampton Saints and Cara Lewis from the Solent Sharks. The morning’s coaching session was all aimed at having fun and playing lots of game-related activities to help the ladies get to know each other and experience an all-ladies session. After lunch there was more game play, but this time the ladies were grouped into the teams ready for the exhibition match. We were also joined by GB athlete Faye West, GB talent athlete Gemma Lumsdaine, and Performance Pathway Manager Stuart McLindon as additional team coaches.

Divided into the Blue and the White team, the ladies got the opportunity to play a full exhibition match on the show court at the King Power Quad Nations, with an all-female referee and table officiating team. With lots of spectators cheering them on and tournament media taking lots of photos, the ladies put on a fast and furious example of ladies competing in wheelchair rugby. Over the four quarters of the match the White team were victorious in the end, but this was more of a triumph for putting the spotlight on women in our sport. One of the ladies said: “Awesome experience, great way to meet other people and learn in different groups and build team plays. I hope you do this again, such a memorable day.“
