Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby will be travelling to Birmingham Alabama on 18 May to take on the top three world ranked nations at the Lakeshore Foundation. GB who recently announced ISPS Handa as its new principal partner will be looking to build on their current form which saw them narrowly lose to world champions Japan in the final of the recent King Power Quad Nations tournament in Leicester. This is a big year for all of the top teams as they prepare for their zonal championships which are qualifiers for the 2020 Paralympic Games and for the World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge to be played alongside the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo in October.
The GB Team selected to play the USA, Australia and Japan at Lakeshore is:
Kylie Grimes, Jonathan Coggan, Ryan Cowling, Nick Cummins, Gavin Walker (Captain) Ayaz Bhuta, Jamie Stead, Jim Roberts and Aaron Phipps.
Head Coach Paul Shaw said, ‘We are looking forward to pitching ourselves against the top three teams in the world. It will be the first time we have met the USA and Australia since the World Championships in Sydney last year and we are much improved since then. It’s also great preparation ahead of the European Championships in Denmark this summer where we will be looking to retain our title’.
The tournament runs from 22-25 May and you can find out more at www.lakeshore.org.
