GBWR Community Week

GB Wheelchair Rugby is delighted to announce its first ever Community Week, with engaging, inspiring and educational webinars.

Community Week 2021 will take place 1st-5th February, and GBWR members will have the opportunity to attend exciting webinars and a quiz from the comfort of their homes, via Zoom.

The sessions will include educational webinars focusing on basic chair maintenance and athlete nutrition as well as evenings with the GB Team’s Head Coach Paul Shaw and a very exciting guest speaker: Wayne Barnes, international rugby union referee. The week will be ending with the GBWR Big Quiz, where club members, officials, volunteers and staff can create teams and compete in a fun, interactive quiz online – the winning team taking home Amazon gift vouchers!

At Wednesday’s (3rd February) webinar attendees can sit back and listen to the inspiring journey of the GB Team Head Coach, Paul Shaw, as he talks about his playing and coaching experiences at the Paralympics. Paul will be drawing on his playing experiences of Sydney (2000), Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008) as well as his coaching experience of Rio (2016). As well as looking back he will look to the future, discussing the preparation for Tokyo and the effect COVID-19 has had on preparations.

Monday 1st February An Evening with International Rugby Union Referee Wayne Barnes

We are delighted to announce that the guest speaker opening GBWR’s Community Week 2021 is Wayne Barnes, English international rugby union referee

7pm-8.30pm

Wayne will talk about his journey from a grassroots referee to officiating at the World Cup, discussing how he prepares for high-profile games, coping with the pressure and dealing with the introduction of new technology. He will also be doing a Q&A session open to everyone who attends this webinar.

Tuesday 2nd February Basic Mechanics: Maintaining Your Rugby Chair

Delivered by GB Mechanic Jonathan Roach

7-9pm

Jon will talk through the tasks involved in the basic maintenance of a rugby chair, highlighting the techniques and the equipment needed. He will also be available to answer questions, talk through issues and offer advice.

Wednesday 3rd February Being an International Wheelchair Rugby Coach: Experiences of the Paralympics

Delivered by GB Head Coach Paul Shaw 

7-8pm

Paul will be discussing his experiences of previous Paralympics as a player and a head coach, and looking at the journey to Tokyo – the planning, challenges, highs and lows, and the effects of COVID-19 on the preparations.

Thursday 4th February Match Day Nutrition in Wheelchair Rugby

Delivered by Jordan Fenton, PhD researcher at the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport at Loughborough University

7-8pm

In this nutrition workshop, Jordan will be focusing on the fundamentals of performance nutrition as well as how to optimise diet around competition. This will cover all aspects of the tournament weekend from pre-competition preparation to post-tournament recovery. Overall, the aim of this workshop is to help players and coaches understand how to think intuitively when it comes to their nutrition so that every individual can make the right choices to maximise performance.

Friday 5th February GBWR Big Quiz

7:30-9pm

We are excited to host a live virtual quiz! Gather a team (maximum of 7 people per team) and join us for this fun and interactive quiz, to see if you can beat the GBWR staff team. Each member of the winning team will receive £15 in Amazon gift vouchers!

The quiz will be hosted by Brain Men and run via Zoom. Teams will be required to have a separate communication platform where they can discuss answers with their team.
