A Happy Christmas to the Wheelchair Rugby Family

Christmas is a great time for all of us to take a breather and to reflect on the things that really bring value to our lives. Top of these for most of us is our family and our friends and Christmas often gives us an opportunity to spend time with them. This year will be special for some who will enjoy new additions to their family – in particular I am thinking of Ross and Eileen who will have the joy of a first Christmas with their baby son Luke, and Archie and Christy who will spend their first Christmas together as a married couple. Celebrating our Volunteers

In my blog last week I said how good it feels to be part of a team and I reflected on some of the individuals who work away at delivering our sport. The one group we should all celebrate is our volunteers – the many in our clubs and at local and national level who just get on with it and make things happen. Without them our sport really could not function and it’s worth us remembering that and saying thank you for all that they do. I am reminded that when I joined GBWR at the end of 2009 the sport was both managed and delivered by volunteers with the exception of some professional staff employed to deliver the GB programme. ‘It makes me feel part of a team………..’

This week we received a letter addressed to our Ambassador and England rugby star Mike Brown. It was from a young man called Henry Zahab who has been part of the youth programme  RDO Paul Arnold has been running in Richmond, coached by Luke White. The letter was to Mike because it has been through his generous donations that we have been able to fund this. You will remember that Mike gave his QBE award money to us from last season and we have just had another donation from him through the sale of his old kit. Super Series Divisions 2 and 3 About to Start

This week I have been at the International Rugby Board World Rugby Conference in London where Steve Brown and I presented on the World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge 2015. It was a fantastic conference for us and there is a real interest in our tournament from potential sponsors and broadcasters. The challenge now is to turn that interest into a commitment to play a part in what will be an amazing event for athletes, spectators and our sport, and I am working hard to achieve that.
