Biography

Gavin’s journey into wheelchair rugby began with a life-altering accident in 2010, when a fall on wet decking resulted in a spinal injury. At the time, he had been serving in the fire service since 2003. During his rehabilitation, Gavin was introduced to wheelchair rugby and attended his first training session in 2011—a moment that would redefine his future.

That same year, Gavin was selected for the GBWR Development Squad, joining a new wave of athletes who would go on to form the core of the national team. He continued working for the Sheffield Fire Service until 2012, before committing fully to his athletic career.

In 2013, Gavin earned his place on the national squad and became a full-time athlete. He made his Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, where he was a consistent starter and a key contributor to the team’s performance.

Gavin’s leadership qualities shone through as he co-captained the GB team to their third consecutive European Championship title in 2019, alongside teammate Chris Ryan. His role as Co-Captain continued through to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where he played an integral part in leading the team to a historic gold medal victory—Great Britain’s first in wheelchair rugby.

Off the court, Gavin is a devoted father of two daughters and works with the Spinal Injuries Association, offering support and guidance to individuals adjusting to life after spinal injury. His story is one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment—both to his sport and to the wider community.
