On Sunday, we welcome ten teams to Stoke Mandeville Stadium as we reach the midway point in our brand-new Wheelchair Rugby 5s Summer League.
The 5s Summer League is the variant tournament, established to give those players not necessarily classifiable for the Paralympic version a chance to play at a competitive level.
The tournament kicked off last month in Aylesbury with the ten sides split into the Red and Blue conferences. Dorset Destroyers and Stoke Mandeville Maulers top their respective groups heading into the second tournament day. It was a great day at the beginning of May with many new players getting their first taste of competitive wheelchair rugby as well as giving some of the Super Series players a chance to get on court.
Joining Maulers in the blue conference are Leicester Tigers, Westcountry Hawks, Norfolk Knights and Brighton Buccaneers. In the red conference, ready to challenge the Destroyers, are Team Solent Sharks, Woodbridge Wheeled Warriors, Northampton Saints and Ospreys.
WR5s is a new concept that differs slightly from the Paralympic game. It is five-a-side with two periods of 12 minutes in a rolling clock.
It promises to be fast-paced, hard-hitting and plenty of fun for everyone involved. It is a free event for spectators and we encourage anybody to come over to the stadium and witness this new version of wheelchair rugby.
The full schedule and further information about the day can be found here. If you cannot make it to Stoke Mandeville at the weekend, make sure you keep up with the GBWR social media channels for all the latest updates.
