David Pond

Chief Executive Officer

David has been Chief Executive of GBWR since 2009. He sees his role as enthusing all in GBWR and enabling them to develop the sport and to enjoy the opportunities it provides.

A former Commodore in the Royal Navy, David held senior appointments in the UK and overseas and moved through the ranks from Lieutenant to Commodore and to hold Command, Chief Executive and NATO appointments. Operational duties included a world deployment aboard the aircraft carrier, HMS Illustrious, and he spent time spent in Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Canada.

He left the service in 2006 to start his own interim management and consultancy business specialising in leadership, organisational development and business transformation. He retains a stake in this business, which works with clients in the private and public sectors.

David is a Non Executive Director of Plymouth Hospital’s NHS Trust; Chair of the Diocese of Plymouth Independent Child Safeguarding Commission and part of the UK Sport International Leadership Programme.

A lifelong sportsman, he is a sports graduate from Loughborough University and played rugby at county level and for the Royal Navy, though he now realises this was a breeze compared with his efforts to play wheelchair rugby!

Julie Bunnage

National Development Director

Prior to her appointment as joint National Development Director with Paul Arnold in 2018, Julie previously led our community programme, delivering excellent national events and local projects including: the ground-breaking BT WWRC15 Community Festival, the inaugural women and girls’ wheelchair rugby ‘This Girl Can’ workshops and activation events across Rugby World Cup fan zones, creating opportunities for over 400 new participants to experience wheelchair rugby. Additionally, she was integral to initiating three sustainable youth hubs during the first year of the BT Youth Programme. She is a former Senior Relationship Manager within Sport England’s National Sport Directorate, and brings 30 years of sport development experience, delivering successful outcomes in a variety of settings ranging from sports clubs, schools, local government departments, business and charities.

Paul Arnold

National Development Director

Paul is a sports development graduate from Gloucester University and prior to GBWR he was the Disability Sports Development Officer for Active Gloucestershire charged with integrating disability sport into core programmes of the sports’ partnership. He also spent 6 years working for the FA as its Disability Football Development Officer. He joined GBWR in 2013 as a Regional Development Officer and had been demonstrably successful having developed his area from 4 established clubs to 12 – not a bad achievement in 5 years! He is also the architect of the first recognized wheelchair rugby coaching qualification and coaching pathway. Paul took on the title of National Development Director in 2018, a joint role held with Julie Bunnage.
